Step back in time with a visit to the historic Mangapwani Slave Chambers, built around 1880 by Mohammed Bin Nassor Al-Alwi. Carved from coral rock and linked to the seaside just 2 km away, this site served as a hidden passage and storage for slaves even after slavery was officially abolished in 1873.

Surrounded by indigenous trees like Breadfruit and Rambutan, and fragrant shrubs, the area offers both natural beauty and a deep historical narrative. Between 1880 and 1905, these chambers were secretly used to conceal enslaved people, especially for illegal trade with the Middle East.

The chambers stand as a haunting reminder of Zanzibar’s past and a powerful educational site.
